I don’t want to go to my Company’s Holiday party. Any advice?
Ok, Scrooge. This is where that “team player” phrase really comes into play.
Unless you have had a major calamity in your life it is probably in your best interest to make an appearance at the party. Here is our advice on how to work the room effectively and efficiently:
-
When you arrive, seek out your boss/leader; shake hands and chit chat.
-
After your boss, make sure you stop and spend a few moments with your peers and internal customers. If you are worried about getting stuck chatting too long, have two drinks in your hands and leave with the statement “ I better take this drink to XXXX”. This doesn’t mean drink too much. The two drinks are not for you!
-
Work your way to the perimeter of the party and chat with people by the door. You do not need to announce a “good-bye” to anyone—just quietly leave.
-
Follow up in a couple of days with a “thank you” note to your boss as well as anyone who coordinated the party itself.
Follow these simple guidelines and you may be surprised that the Company Party isn’t such a bad event after all.
